It’s rare that you find one destination that has everything you could desire for a magical outdoor adventure. However, we’d argue that Limekiln State Park boasts just that! Redwood forest, beach beauty, waterfalls, and historic ruins – this state park on the Big Sur coastline has it all. If you have yet to explore this gem of a park, consider it added to your bucket list. There’s a lot to see at this lovely, lesser-known state park.
Located along Highway 1 on the Big Sur coastline, Limekiln State Park boasts unending natural beauty and rich history. From the redwood forest to the sea, you'll want to explore every inch of this incredible park.
Offering 700 acres of tranquil beauty, the park has something for all types of adventurers. If you love getting lost in peaceful landscapes, you'll certainly enjoy meandering the fern-lined trails that wind beneath the redwood canopy. Picnic spots can be found all around the redwood groves and about a dozen campsites are tucked away near Limekiln Creek.
The park's Limekiln Trail is a great place to start your adventure in this gem of a park. The easy half-mile trail leads you across scenic bridges and directly to the enormous furnaces that were once used to supply lime for mortar in San Francisco's buildings.
Rockland Lime and Lumber Company began processing lime from the canyon in 1887. The towering stone furnaces you see today would burn for long periods of time in order to purify the lime. The area's limestone was mostly depleted after just three years, and the remnants of those kilns serve as a reminder to the once-thriving industry.
The park's Falls Trail is another must-do. Following the creek, you can hike directly to a gorgeous 100-foot cascade. You can get up close to the waterfall by crossing the creek. Yes, it's worth getting wet for!
You can also access the beach from the park entrance area. Although small, the park's beach is great for soaking up Big Sur's magnificent coastal beauty.
Whether you prefer forest or ocean, history or natural beauty, Limekiln State Park has something for you. Plan a day trip to this hidden slice of heaven soon! You'll definitely be glad you did.
