Visit a historic and active lighthouse when you make the journey to Point Bonita Lighthouse in Sausalito. The walk to the lighthouse is just a half-mile long, and every inch of it boasts spectacular beauty.
The Point Bonita Lighthouse is one of the Bay Area's best-kept secrets. Built in 1855, it was just the third lighthouse built on the West Coast. Its job was to help ships make their way to safety through the dangerous waters of Golden Gate.
The lighthouse is active to this very day and is currently maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Seeing it in person is a scenic journey that is downright awe-inspiring, and you'll want to experience it for yourself.
The lighthouse is reached by a half-mile trail. Although the trail is well-maintained, you'll want to keep in mind that it's extremely steep in some parts. Come prepared with some good walking shoes and a camera for capturing the views!
The trail runs through a tunnel approximately halfway into the trail. The tunnel is only open during visitor hours which are Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you'd like to reach the lighthouse, you'll want to be sure to come during these hours.
Getting to the lighthouse may require some planning, but you'll see that it's definitely worth it. The view of Point Bonita surrounded by the rugged coastline is simply breathtaking, and it's a sight you won't be forgetting anytime soon.
Another must-visit attraction in the area is the famous Battery Mendell. This abandoned army fortification makes for an awesome place to explore after visiting the lighthouse.
This unique lighthouse walk is the perfect activity for history and nature lovers alike. Take a look at a 164-year-old lighthouse and treat yourself to some gorgeous coastal views at the same time! For more information, visit the National Park website here .
