Northern California is full of beautiful lakes, mountains, beaches, forests, and other natural wonders, but nothing else can quite compare to this one of a kind waterfall that draws thousands of tourists each year. Burney Falls is a busy and popular place, but it’s for a good reason. There is nothing else that can compare.
Burney Falls are considered by many the most beautiful falls in California, if not the world. Unlike Yosemite Falls, Vernal Falls, or Nevada Falls there isn't just one mighty stream of water that tumbles over rocks.
Instead, the waterfall is a multitude of streams that seep out of mossy rocks and craggy crevices. The water cascades down the lush green growth into a pool of turquoise blue water, capped off by a brilliant rainbow.
This is an especially wonderful time to visit Burney Falls, which are much larger than normal thanks to the extremely wet and snowy winter season of 2016/2017.
The state park is within the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau natural region. It's a popular place for camping, hiking, swimming and of course, visiting waterfalls.
Burney Creek originates from the park's underground springs before tumbling 129 feet over the falls and continuing to Lake Britton. Pictured here is the Burney Creek Bridge, part of the Burney Falls loop trail.
Burney Falls and the surrounding state park are a must see item that should belong on the bucket list of all Northern Californians. The most popular, and most crowded, time to visit the park is April through October. Avoid the weekends here, if you can.
