A treasured feature of Long Barn Lodge is the wintertime ice skating arena. This popular tradition is usually available from November through March. This year, they opened on November 16 and will remain open until March 10.
The lodge is truly an institution. It was first built in 1918 by a rancher named Warren Beal. At the time, it provided food and lodging for travelers driving across Sonora Pass.
Motel units were added to the lodge from 1949 to 1968, and the legendary ice skating rink was built in 1971. In fact, the ice skating rink is now considered one of the oldest portions of the lodge, since a 2002 fire destroyed the main lodge.
Over the decades, the ice skating rink has become a well-loved wintertime tradition. Locals hold childhood memories on the rink close to their heart, and new visitors find themselves delightfully surprised by the quaint rink every year.
