If you’ve been on the hunt for your next day trip location, consider this quiet mountain town. This town is unknown to most, but it’s truly one of Northern California’s greatest hidden gems. Home to just around 225 people, the historic town of Sierra City contains a handful of Gold Rush-era buildings. However, there’s a lot more to this place than meets the eye. The town may be small, but it’s huge on character. The town’s historic quality along with its breathtaking surroundings make it the perfect destination for your next day trip.
Sierra City is a charming little community tucked away at the foot of the Sierra Buttes, right along the North Yuba River. This idyllic mountain town is a sweet escape from the city.
The town came to fruition during the Gold Rush. Mining claims in the Sierra Buttes brought a steady stream of miners to the area, and the town had a peak population of approximately 3,000 people in 1850.
Today, Sierra's City's main industry is tourism. People travel from all over to take a look at the remnants of this once bustling mining town. It still contains historic building's from the town's heyday such as the town hall, Masonic Lodge, and an original Wells Fargo building.
This place is just bursting with quintessential small town charm. The small library is often closed, but you'll find all sorts of books on the front porch which can be traded for a small donation.
The town may be quiet, but don't be fooled. There's plenty to do. The town's main attraction is the Kentucky Mine And Museum. The mine is a unique look at the industry that brought people to this area over a century and a half ago.
The museum offers daily tours of the mine and the seven-story stamp mill. You can't help but look in awe at the massive stamping equipment as you stroll through the mill. During the tours, the mill is brought to life so that visitors can see it in action.
Since the town is nestled in one of the most picturesque mountain settings, it's no wonder that recreational opportunities are abundant. The hike to Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout is a must when you are in this area.
The lookout is located just north of town. A three mile hike takes you to a historic fire lookout that was built in 1915. You can climb to the top of the lookout where you are rewarded with absolutely awe-inspiring views of the area, including Sardines Lakes and Mt. Lassen.
Afterward, you can cool off at one of the mountain lakes. Boat rentals are available at the nearby Sardine Lake Resort for the lower lake. If you hike a little further, you will reach sweet solitude at the upper lake. This place is truly like heaven on earth.
Sierra City is much more than just an old mining town in the mountains. It's a gateway to some of Northern California's most pristine natural areas including towering mountains and high-country lakes. Upon visiting the town, you may find that you just can't bring yourself to leave.
