You’d never guess that there is so much history within this suburban park. Located in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights is Rusch Park, and within the park is a historic home that tells the story of the area’s past. This area was once a sprawling 480-acre ranch that belonged to a resilient family who made their way to California during the Gold Rush. Now, this Northern California historic property hosts weddings and events, and might be turned into a museum someday.
Within the span of about 165 years, this land was transformed into a ranch, then into a craftsman-style residence, and now this lovely building sits within a suburban park.
The Volles raised 11 children on the ranch, including Julia and her brother, Fred, who later were largely responsible for operating the ranch.

Tragedy struck in 1914 when the original home succumbed to fire, leading to the construction of the present-day Craftsman-style residence that now graces Rusch Park.
In 1950, the Volle family made a generous donation to the community by gifting several acres of land, including their home, to establish Rusch Park. This donation marked the transition of the property from a private family ranch to a public park. It has been managed by the Sunrise Recreation & Park District since 1977.
It has evolved over the years from its origins as part of the ranch to its current role as a venue for events. (We’d love to attend a wedding at this lovely venue!)
Adjacent to the Rusch Home, the Rusch Botanical Gardens add another layer of historical significance to the park.
Originating in 1916, these gardens have evolved into a State Site of Historical Interest. Open daily from dawn to dusk, the gardens showcase the diverse biomes of California. The gardens feature an array of flora, including roses, herbs, citrus, and African plants.
Recognizing the importance of preserving this historical gem, the Sunrise Recreation and Park District formed the Rusch Home Committee.
This dedicated group is actively working towards transforming the Rusch Home into a Historic Museum and Special Event Center, ensuring that the stories of the Volle Family and the evolution of Rusch Park are shared with future generations.
The Historic Rusch Home and Gardens show the commitment of a community to preserving the past, and ensuring beautiful spaces for the public to enjoy. Visit the beautiful botanical gardens and view the historic Rusch house to get some insight into California’s history.
