Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is a Roman Catholic Church located in the heart of downtown Sacramento. As one of the largest cathedrals west of the Mississippi River, its towering presence is outright breathtaking when you first see it.
Construction on this enormous man-made wonder began in 1887. Sacramento's first bishop, Patrick Manogue, put the plans in motion to bring this beautiful cathedral to life. Inspired by the incredible churches of Europe, he modeled the Sacramento cathedral after a Paris cathedral called L'Eglise de la Sainte-Trinite.
The Sacramento cathedral boasts an especially unique architectural style, or styles, as it is Italian Renaissance on the exterior and Victorian on the interior. The church has gone through numerous updates over the years, but the designers have always tried to stay true to the original style.
The cathedral's dome is a particularly awe-inspiring feature. Standing 110-feet-high, it was closed up in the 1930s for acoustic reasons. It was re-opened during a 2003 renovation so the public could admire it once again.
