In school, when your teacher caught you daydreaming, they might have said, “Get your head out of the clouds!” While that may have seemed like a bad thing then, it’s an awesome thing now – climbing into the clouds on one of the best hikes in Northern California.
The Emigrant Lake Trail is among over 100 miles of hiking trails located in the Mokelumne Wilderness.
This 105,165-acre rugged expanse soaring up to 10,000-foot peaks is found about an hour south of South Lake Tahoe. The area is so huge it crosses into three counties.
Depending on what time of year you visit, the trailhead markers might be a bit difficult to find.
The overall trail is only about 4-miles long, although it may feel a bit longer while navigating some of the tougher climbing spots. Nevertheless, it is still one of the best hiking spots in the state.
At almost to 9,700-feet high, Emigrant Lake lies at the end of the trail.
