Our state is home to more than our fair share of notable bridges. The Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and Sundial Bridge are just a few that come to mind, but there really are so much more. In fact, the highest bridge in the state is located in Northern California and it’s a must-see for anyone. Whether you’re a fan of notable architecture or you just like to enjoy a good view, a visit to this particular bridge is bound to impress.
Our state is certainly no stranger to amazing bridges, but by far one of the most notable is Foresthill Bridge near Auburn. If you have yet to see the highest bridge in California, you'll want to plan a little trip ASAP.
Back when it opened in 1973, the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge was considered the second highest bridge in the world. It's since been bumped to 50th highest in the world, but fourth highest in the entire United States. Not to mention, it's officially the highest in the state of California.
Standing at 730-feet tall, the bridge towers over the surrounding scenery and provides a once-in-a-lifetime perspective to anybody who crosses it. From here, you'll get a fantastic view of the Sierra Nevada foothills, the town of Foresthill, and the North Fork of the American River.
Interestingly enough, the bridge was actually constructed to cross a reservoir that never ended up being built. A dam was in plans to be constructed on the East Fork of the American River. However, plans for the dam were halted over a combination of things including environmental concerns, cost, and unforeseen seismic studies.
Regardless of why it was built, the bridge has become an iconic destination that's definitely worth visiting. The bridge is noted as very pedestrian friendly, boasting wide walkways on each side that are perfect for viewing the American River gorge below. In fact, this has made it an ideal destination for BASE and bungee jumpers, if you're into that sort of thing!
The bridge has even received some modest international fame in the media over the years. A scene from the 2002 action thriller "xXx" with Vin Diesel was shot here, in which Diesel dramatically drives a red Corvette off of the bridge and parachutes down into the Auburn Ravine. The bridge also made a cameo in the 2009 romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth" with Gerard Butler.
The Foresthill Bridge may not have the same kind of name recognition as some of our state's other famous bridges, but we really couldn't be more impressed with this man-made wonder. Experience the view of a lifetime and make visiting California's highest bridge a priority.
