If you’ve spent enough time exploring Northern California, then you probably know that it’s always those last-minute spots that you didn’t actually plan for that end up making the biggest impression. Although you can’t exactly plan spontaneity, you can definitely plant the seeds for it. One destination that you’ll want to have on your radar is the High Bluff Overlook. It requires a slight detour to find it, but once you do, you’ll be blown away by the beauty that it has to offer. If you find yourself in the area, plan to scribble this place in – you won’t regret it.
One of the most scenic spots in Redwood National and State Parks, High Bluff Overlook is most definitely worth the detour when you feel like taking in the Northern California's coast stunning beauty.
The overlook is about a 15-minute detour off of Highway 101 just west of Klamath. You'll find the overlook's parking area along a spur road on the western side of the Coastal Loop Drive. You can take the Klamath Beach Road exit to get to the Coastal Loop Drive.
Prepare for a trek on a narrow, winding road. Vehicles of most sizes can reach the overlook, but be aware that if you have an RV or are towing a trailer that you may not be able to complete the entire Coastal Loop Drive. However, we promise the views are worth the drive (and the patience.)
Upon arriving at the overlook, you'll find yourself at the perfect vantage point for viewing the rugged coastline. On a clear day, you'll be treated to a sweeping view of crashing waves, hidden coves, secluded beaches, and awe-inspiring sunsets.
A small interpretive exhibit contains information about the area's geology. This is a great spot for viewing wildlife, so bring your binoculars! Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and peregrine falcons. If the season is right, you may even spot gray whales hiding between the waves below.
There's also a small park with picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. Pack a picnic and make a day of it at this secluded oasis. After lunch, you can take a stroll along the short hiking trail that leads to a lower overlook for even better views of the rocky cliffside.
In our humble opinion, the undeveloped Northern California coastline is one of the most incredible sights in the world. A trip to High Bluff Overlook showcases its beauty like nowhere else. Stop by and admire the view soon!
