When the sweltering summer heat gets to be too much to handle, our redwood forests are the perfect place to seek refuge. After all, not only areredwood trees magnificent to look at but they provide some much-needed shade as well. Richardson Grove State Park is a popular spot for Humboldt County residents during the summertime. Loaded with hiking trails and plenty of jaw-dropping trees, the park is an absolutely gorgeous place to spend the day. However, it’s also home to a delightful swimming hole that you definitely won’t be able to resist on a hot Northern California day.
During the hot summer months, there's no better place to spend the afternoon than Richardson Grove State Park. Located near Garberville, the park can best be described as a beautiful forest oasis and it's the perfect place to cool off on a hot day.
People have been taking advantage of this beautiful sanctuary ever since it first became a state park in 1922. In fact, Richardson Grove was one of California's very first redwood parks. It features stunning redwoods that have grown up to 300-feet tall.
However, the redwoods aren't the only thing the park is known for. The park also attracts visitors who are looking to relax in the scenic and refreshing swimming hole located along the South Fork of the Eel River.
The park actually offers two main swimming areas. Swim Beach is located right across from the parking area. However, the most popular one is located just a short walk downstream of the river. Trust us—it's worth finding!
The swimming hole can be accessed via a small footbridge that crosses the river. It's a regularly trafficked area and the area is well-marked, making it easy to find.
The swimming hole is comprised of a tranquil little section of water along the river. The water is a deep blue-green color and it couldn't be any more inviting. People often bring tubes or rafts to float in, but the water is the perfect temperature for freestyle soaking.
Beside the swimming hole is a family-friendly stretch of pebble beach which is great for setting up some chairs and an umbrella. Surrounded by ginormous redwood trees, the swimming hole feels nice and secluded. It's like a little slice of paradise in Humboldt County.
This swimming hole is absolute perfection. If you plan to visit, keep in mind that there are a few rules. Diving and jumping into the water isn't allowed. There are no lifeguards on duty at any time so it's up to you to use caution. And remember, always leave our beautiful parks exactly as you found them!
