Gold mining played a huge role in our state’s growth and there’s no denying the importance it had in turning the Golden State into the place that it is today. In some cases, you can physically see the impact the industry had with your own eyes. This hidden overlook provides just that. The short trail takes you to an awe-inspiring vantage point of the mountainous surroundings while also providing the perfect view of a piece of California history. This little-known spot makes for a great excursion when you find yourself in the area, if not for the stunning panoramic views alone.
Go on a mini adventure and delve into a bit of California history at the same time when you plan a stop at this hidden overlook. Accessed by a short and easy hike, it makes for a nice and quick outing that's bound to leave an impression.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains are full of mining history, and you can actually see the scars this history left behind when you visit the Omega Mine Overlook. Located near Nevada City, you'll find it nestled along a rest stop off of State Highway 20 east of town.
The interpretive trail to the overlook is just a half-mile long, making it perfect for those in need of stretching their legs after a few hours on the road. It will lead you straight to the viewing platform where you'll be treated to the view of a lifetime.
At the platform, you'll get an epic perspective of the Sierra Nevadas and the beauty that surrounds them. You'll also spot the remains of two massive hydraulic gold mines, called Alpha and Omega.
The gold coloring along the side of the mountain look like literal scars, and it represent 30 years of extensive mining before the government shut the mines down for their environmental impact.
Work began on extracting gold from these mines during the mid-1850s. They were mined extensively through the mid-1880s, and during that time they produced over $2 million worth of gold. Although unfortunate they left a permanent mark on such a beautiful area, they represent an important part of NorCal's past.
