If you’re a book lover, then you know there are few things as magical as exploring a bookstore or library. Northern California happens to be home to many bookish destinations, but this memorial library hiding in a redwood forest may just be one of the best we’ve seen. Tucked away beneath the towering redwood canopy, the Henry Miller Memorial Library is a combined arts center, bookstore, and performance venue. It’s definitely a literary enthusiast’s dream come true!
Set in the middle of a majestic grove of redwood trees, Henry Miller Memorial Library is a book shop like no other you've seen before. You'll find this bookish destination in Big Sur right along Highway 1.
Henry Miller Memorial Library is a combined arts center, bookstore, and performance venue. It's located inside of a small house that was built for Miller in the 1960s by his friend and fellow writer Emil White. It was officially dedicated as a memorial after Miller's death in 1980.
It's said that Miller himself actually disapproved of memorials. He once said that "Only by living your own life to the full can you honor the memory of someone." Although Miller might've disapproved of a memorial made in his name, we doubt he would shake his head at a destination that exudes such love for the arts and literature!
Keep in mind that this little house is far from your average bookstore. You won't find neat rows of newly released books on these shelves. Instead, you'll be treated to an eclectic selection of literature hanging in plastic bags from tree branches and walls. Take your time as you explore - you may just find your next great read where you least expect it.
The library also contains an extensive collection of Miller's books, manuscripts, letters, and other ephemera. The library is considered the second large repository of Miller's works next to the collection at UCLA.
Henry Miller Memorial Library seeks to preserve the writer's spirit through community events, book signings, lectures, and performances. It seems like there's always something on the schedule to take place at the library, so be sure to check the calendar before you head over!
It's hard to think of a dreamier destination for those who love both books and nature. Plan a trip to Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur - a lovely paradise for literature enthusiasts! Visit the library's website for more information.
