When the noise of the world feels like too much to handle, a visit to one of Northern California’s spectacular hiking trails is the perfect solution. Not only is our region of the Golden State filled with fantastic hikes, but the act of exploring our natural landscapes make for an incredibly therapeutic adventure. You can’t go wrong with any of our backcountry trails, but one that you’ll definitely want to seek out is the Heart Lake trail. This short and moderate trail leads you to a pristine view of Heart Lake, of course, but it also boasts the most stunning view of Mt. Shasta in the background. Seek it out the next time you need to tune out the entire world and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.
Nestled away in the stunning landscape of Castle Crags Wilderness, Heart Lake is the definition of a hidden gem that's worth seeking out. Not only is the lake itself a beauty you'll want to see for yourself, but the hike to Heart Lake rewards you with outstanding views of the one and only Mt. Shasta.
Located approximately 45 minutes north of Redding, the trailhead can be found at the parking lot at Castle Lake. From there, you'll embark on a short but moderate 2-mile hike to Heart Lake. It's a short hike but it does contain some steep sections, so come prepared.
The trail is best accomplished spring through fall, although the area is a popular snowshoeing spot in winter as well. To get to the lake, you'll follow the trail as it leads you along the eastern ridge of Castle Lake. You'll be led through pine trees on a well-traveled dirt trail before arriving at the glorious heart-shaped pond known as Heart Lake.
Once you see it, you'll be glad you made this short but beautiful trek. Heart Lake is stunning, but it's the view that will leave you in complete awe. After all, it's from here that you'll witness a picture-perfect vantage point of Mt. Shasta towering over the wilderness before you.
Heart Lake is quiet and serene. It makes for a great place to sit and relax for an hour or two. Alternatively, you can make your way back down to Castle Lake for recreational fun. Castle Lake is substantially larger and great for swimming, kayaking, fishing, and paddle boarding during the warmer months.
Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities to lengthen your adventure after reaching Heart Lake. Spur trails in the area will lead you to epic views of both Lassen Peak and Castle Crags. Not to mention, the Pacific Crest Trail is just a half-mile away.
For one of the most breathtaking views of Mt. Shasta there is to offer, make the trek to the ridge above Heart Lake. This short and sweet trail is the perfect adventure for when you need to escape civilization for a bit while soaking up Northern California's natural beauty.
