Founded in 1843, the charming community of Marysville is one of the most historic in Northern California. This means it's also home to quite a few ghost stories, including the ones regarding the town's Silver Dollar Saloon.
Built in 1851, it's a miracle that this historic structure is still standing—never mind still operating as a working saloon! Over the years, the Silver Dollar has played all sorts of roles, from a restaurant and hotel to even a brothel at one point.
Today, the Silver Dollar is considered one of the town's oldest historical landmarks. Not only that, it's also a treasured watering hole in the community. The old saloon serves up your typical selection of cocktails and draft brews, and they even boast a menu of delicious pub fare.
Fitting of the historic atmosphere, the menu is comprised of hearty Western fare that can satiate any appetite. From juicy burgers to steak dinners, the delicious food is an unexpected surprise in a century-old setting.
Despite its seemingly harmless appearance, the Silver Dollar has a dark history associated with it. The upstairs portion of the building served as a brothel until the early 1970s, and legend has it that a madame was murdered there by a jealous boyfriend during the 1960s.
Many believe the bar's relationship with the brothel is why it's allegedly haunted to this day. Others believe the hauntings come from back when the Silver Dollar was known as the Guadalajara Cafe.
Back then, the cafe was owned by the family of Juan Corona, a serial killer who was responsible for murdering 25 people during the '60s. Some even question whether the bar may have been a possible crime scene at one point. One thing's clear, evil has definitely lurked here.
