Towering over the Plumas National Forest near Berry Creek is a geologic wonder that is both mesmerizing itself and also in the view that it provides. Best of all, the hike to the top of it is just a mile long, making it a must-do.
The trailhead can be found off of Bald Rock Road, north of Lake Oroville State Recreational Area. From the trail's parking lot, a brief half-mile access trail will lead you straight to the awe-inspiring batholith.
The trails starts off by leading you through a forested area, thick with pine trees and a meandering creek. However, it isn't long before the trail leaves the first and enters a rocky playground unlike anything you've seen before.
There is some minor scrambling involved in climbing to the top of Big Bald Rock, so be sure to wear the appropriate footwear and take your time getting to the top. The highest point of the formation can be found directly southwest of the trailhead.
The aptly named Big Bald Rock will blow you away with its sheer size, and this is only the exposed part! The granite formation is actually part of the larger Bald Rock Pluton, and it's definitely big and bald. Additionally, numerous funky rock formations can be found scattered all across its surface.
However, it's the view that promises to make this adventure to remember. As you look out from the top of the outcropping, you'll witness a breathtaking view of the surrounding forest that seems to go on forever. Words simply can't describe the beauty.
For a quick adventure that packs a punch, the Big Bald Rock Trail will do the trick. Those who wish to lengthen their adventure can take the time to explore the entire rock formation, including the ones situated all around Big Bald Rock.
