Most people are aware of the abandoned ghost town called Bodie located near the California-Nevada border. This ghost town is famous for its “state of arrested decay”. It’s almost as if time stands still in this ex-mining town. There’s something both beautiful and creepy about walking down the streets of this once prosperous community. Bodie is currently home to a handful of well-preserved buildings along with one seriously creepy cemetery. The supposedly haunted cemetery is a sad reminder of the tumultuous days of the Wild West.
Bodie is an incredible place with a fascinating history. If you want to get an idea for what a real town from the Old West looked like then you'll definitely want to plan a visit. Many of its original structures still stand, including the town's cemetery.
Located on a ridge in the northwest section of Bodie State Historic Park, the cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 80 souls.
Due to the violence that was typical of these types of mining towns, the majority of deaths were not from natural causes. Many of the people who rest here perished from violent acts, sickness, mining accidents, and more.
Some swear that the Bodie cemetery is haunted. A commonly witnessed apparition is a little girl named Evelyn. It's believed that Evelyn died when she was accidentally struck in the head with a pick-axe.
People have also reported seeing a woman in a white dress sitting by her loved one's grave. Although there is no hard evidence of these paranormal occurrences, both park staff and locals will tell you that there's a strange aura about this place.
Many of the headstones are surprisingly still very legible, despite being over a century old. The section of the cemetery with the most headstones is notably the miner's section. When miners died while at work in the mines, the union made sure their graves were marked with nice stone headstones.
Whether you believe in the paranormal element or not, you have to admit there's something unsettling about this ghost town cemetery. This place is a sad reflection of how hard life was in California's early frontier days.
