Lassen Volcanic National Park is by far one of Northern California’s greatest treasures. Comprised of a landscape that’s full of boiling mud pots, fumaroles, volcanic domes, and hot springs, there’s definitely always something to explore in this incredible park. In fact, one of the largest geothermal lakes in the world can be found here and you can see it for yourself on the Boiling Springs Lake Trail.
The largest geothermal feature in the entire park, Boiling Springs Lake is a must-see for Lassen Volcanic National Park visitors. Luckily, there's a 3-mile trail around the hot lake that allows you to get up close and personal with this natural wonder.
The hike begins at the Warner Valley Trailhead. There's a parking area just west of the Warner Valley Campground where you can find the trail's start. From here you'll depart on an easygoing, scenic trail through the park's gorgeous scenery.
The trail begins by winding through a lush meadow before entering into a densely forested area. Keep an eye out for wildflowers during spring and summer. Some trees that you'll be able to spot include ponderosa pine, sugar pine, incense-cedar and white fir.
You'll probably smell the lake before you actually see it. Emanating a strong sulphuric scent, the sight of this breathtaking geothermal lake tucked between the trees is definitely worth braving the foul smell.
The green-blue lake isn't very big—more of a pond, really—but it's a spectacular thing to witness, especially if you can see the steam rising from its surface. A number of steam vents below the lake keep Boiling Springs Lake a steady 125 degrees Fahrenheit all year long.
Seeing this lake firsthand is a remarkable experience, especially considering it's one of the largest hot lakes in thee world. The trail takes you entirely around the lake but you'll want to be sure not to stray too far from it. The ground surrounding the lake is extremely soft from the high temperatures and can easily give way.
There's definitely a lot to do and see around Lassen Volcanic National Park. However, the hike around its largest geothermal feature is truly unlike anything else. Visit Boiling Springs Lake on your next park visit and see it for yourself!
