As some of the greatest icons of Northern California, visiting the redwood trees always makes for a fantastic adventure. With multiple forests and groves waiting to be explored, you could spend an entire lifetime seeing them all. However, if there’s one you definitely should experience at least once, it’s Founders’ Grove. Located along the popular Avenue of Giants, it’s here you can walk among some of the tallest trees in the world for a spectacular outing.
Conveniently located right along Highway 101, Founders' Grove is a popular destination for visitors looking to take in the beauty of the redwoods. After all, the grove is especially large and is home to some of the tallest trees in the world.
Named after the founders of the Save the Redwoods League, the grove can be found along the Avenue of Giants Scenic Highway. The grove is notably picturesque and features three short loop trails that take you past its most impressive features.
The closest trail to the grove's parking lot is called the Founders' Grove Loop and is the most popular of the three. It's a half-mile trail that runs between the Founders' Tree and the fallen-but-mighty Dyerville Giant.
Another trail connects to the Founders' Loop and takes hikers to the visually stunning Mahan Loop. Boasting access to large clusters of towering redwoods, it's home to some of those iconic views that Founders' Grove is famous for.
The third loop trail is known as the Goosepen Loop. It runs pretty close to the highway so it's not as popular, but it still contains some impressive scenery that's worth checking out.
It's recommended to visit Founders' Grove early in the morning in order to avoid the crowds. The winter season is also an ideal time to go if you'd like a serene experience with fewer visitors. It also helps that this is the time of the year that the grove is most lush and its beauty is truly spectacular!
If you have yet to visit Founders' Grove on the Avenue of Giants, you'll want to be sure to plan a visit soon. Home to some of the tallest trees in the world and easily accessible, it makes for a wonderful place to roam for the day.
