When you think of famous prisons, San Francisco’s Alcatraz may be the first that comes to mind. However, that’s surprisingly not the only iconic prison in Northern California. Folsom Prison, the second oldest prison in California, was cemented into history when Johnny Cash made it famous with his song “Folsom Prison Blues.” He would even go on to record a live album at the actual prison! Today, there’s an on-site museum where visitors can learn about the historic performance and much more about the prison’s long and storied history.
After several years of dwindling commercial success, Johnny Cash made history when he performed two shows at Folsom State Prison on January 13, 1968. The resulting live album was a hit and it turned this historic California prison into a household name.
Today, visitors can stop by the Big House Prison Museum and learn all about that famous Johnny Cash performance, along with so much more about the prison's history. Located in an old house on prison property, the museum makes for a fascinating stop.
Although small, the museum is definitely mighty. It's loaded with information about Johnny Cash and the wildly popular #1 album "At Folsom Prison", including memorabilia from those famed concert shows. If you're into music history, you'll definitely love it.
The Johnny Cash stuff makes up a lot of the museum, but definitely not all of it. Most importantly, the museum serves as an exposition and education center for Corrections and the people who live, work, and visit the facilities.
You'll find every corner of the small house loaded with items like photographs, artwork by the prisoners, and even a hand-cranked Gatling gun. It's a fascinating glimpse at a life that few (hopefully) will ever get to experience.
The historic artifacts continue out on the lawn. Outside the museum, visitors can explore an old guard tower, a combo sink and toilet from a cell, and other interesting if not slightly weird prison items.
Whether you're a fan of Johnny Cash or simply a sucker for unique history, a visit to the Folsom Prison Museum is definitely worth your time. Visit the museum's website to learn more.
