Between the California Redwood forests of the north and the wild Northern California coast, is this brewery dedicated to making award-winning craft beer. Located in the city of Blue Lake, the Mad River Brewery has won many local, national, and international awards for its beer.
This is more than just a place to grab a beer. It is owned by the largest federally recognized Indigenous nation in California, the Yurok Tribe.
The tribe’s Mad River Brewery is paving the way for Native American craft breweries and is creating meaningful partnerships.
The Mad River Brewing Company are responsible stewards of the land and have been awarded for their “outstanding efforts in waste reduction” by the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
Much of the waste product resulting from the beer making process, such as spent barley malt and yeast, are fed to local livestock or used as compost.
On the walls of the brewery you’ll see Yurok artwork. Brewery swag, like T-shirts and koozies, are also on display and available for sale.
The laid-back atmosphere of the brewery makes this a perfect spot to stop on a road trip, vacation to the redwoods, or after a morning hike. Spend the afternoon enjoying a brew on their large dog-friendly patio where they have regular live music performances.
The brewery has a wide selection of craft beer and seltzers, plus a food menu with delicious options.
Ask someone on their knowledgeable staff to recommend a beer, or get a tasting. Visitors can taste their award-winning beers that are always on-tap, as well as small batch brews, seasonal varietals, and new experiments.
The kitchen is run by Low & Slow BBQ. They serve foods that pair well with beer, like burgers, chicken sandwiches, and tacos filled with generous portions of smoked meat from the grill.
The brewery also partners with food trucks and vendors, providing plenty of options for guests.
The small city of Blue Lake is relatively unknown in California. It’s located in Humboldt County with a population of 1,195 as of 2021.
Blue Lake is just a 16 mile drive from
Eureka and 6.5 miles from Highway 101. The small city is anything but boring– the city website lists many parks, activities, and events that you don’t typically see for cities this small.
Mad River Brewery is open Thursday through Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Check the brewery’s events calendar to time your visit with fun events, like paint nights, brewery demonstrations, and all-day Happy Hours.
