When the weekend rolls around, Northern Californians are never short on options when it comes to picking a getaway destination. There are definitely a few towns that first come to mind when considering a quick vacation; places like Napa Valley, Sacramento, and the Bay Area are always great options. However, the best experiences always come from the smaller, lesser-known destinations. The town featured below has long flown under the radar for most people when, in fact, it may just be the most excellent weekend getaway destination that Northern California has to offer. With a reputation as an enduring lumber town, most visitors easily look past Fort Bragg when considering a destination for their next getaway. However, the underrated town is actually rich with things to do and see, and visiting it should definitely be a priority.
When it comes to visiting the North Coast, Mendocino is usually the location that most people gravitate towards. Fort Bragg's new tourist-friendly image is about to change all that. Not only is this place bursting with natural beauty, but the quaint atmosphere easily charms visitors from the moment they arrive.
Perhaps the town's most notable attraction is the one and only Glass Beach. This popular destination has long been a hotspot for photographers, since the abundant sea glass makes for a unique and gorgeous image.
While you're there, be sure to explore the rest of McKerricher State Park. Covering nine miles of coastline, the park boasts an abundance of habitats including dunes, headlands, forest, coves, and wetlands. Its especially noted for its otherworldly atmosphere which is bound to blow you away.
Back in town, you'll find that lodging options are abundant. Instead of staying at a boring old hotel, you'll definitely want to take advantage of the towns many charming B&Bs. A stay at the oldest continuously operated inn in town—Living Light Inn— definitely won't disappoint.
And dining options are just as endless! A local favorite is Django's Rough Bar Cafe which boasts stunning ocean views and delicious, made-from-scratch seafood. Like many Fort Bragg eateries, this quaint restaurant is full of character.
Be sure to plan on taking an afternoon walk across the iconic Pudding Creek Trestle, as well. This old railroad bridge was recently restored to the beauty that it is today, and it provides awe-inspiring views of the beach and ocean below.
On your way out of town, be sure to stop by another iconic destination: the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. Located south of Fort Bragg on Highway 1, visiting this historic lighthouse is the perfect way to end a memorable weekend getaway in Fort Bragg.
