Folks in the San Francisco Bay Area have always paved the way for grander things to come. Yerba Buena Island, which sits in the middle of San Francisco Bay between downtown San Francisco and Oakland, its only land entrance via the Bay Bridge, was formerly known as Goat Island, a nod to the original “residents” of the island.

In the 1870s it was reimagined for use as the Pacific Coast’s first U.S. Naval Training Station and served as such during the war efforts and was renamed Yerba Buena Island. The lighthouse here played a major role in the defense of the area.

Over the years it also served as an anti-submarine patrol docking station, the West Coast office of Pan American Airways, a Works Progress Administration project, and the site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, among other uses. Decommissioned by the military decades ago, there have always been vastly different ideas about what to do with the island. Residential development was always strongly opposed - until now.
