There’s nothing quite like taking the day to explore a park you’ve never visited before. If you have yet to experience Tolay Lake Regional Park in Sonoma County, consider it high time that you do. Home to 11 miles of hiking trails across hillsides and grasslands, there are plenty of ways to explore this gem of a park. Just be aware that you’ll likely be sharing the trail with cows when you visit. The park is full of grazing cattle and they actually benefit the landscape in various ways. Bordered by hills between the Petaluma River and Sonoma, Tolay Lake Regional Park offers sweeping views of a downright dreamy landscape. It's a fantastic place to explore when you feel like immersing yourself in a serene setting.
Boasting 3,400 acres of hills, valleys, and grassland, Tolay Lake is actually the largest of Sonoma County's regional parks. It's open daily from 7:00 a.m. to sunset.
Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are all welcomed activities at Tolay Lake. The park is home to more than 11 miles of trails across mostly open grasslands.
There are several trails to choose from and hikers can combine the different trails to form shorter or longer experiences. Most trails stretch across open grassland, which means there is very little shade. Be sure to bring water!
You may not come across shade, but you'll probably come across a cow or two. Cows graze at Tolay Lake year-round and they are the cherry on top of this picture-perfect setting!
Don't be fooled - these cows do a lot more than look cute. Cows have actually been introduced to several parks around Sonoma County because cattle grazing is known to reduce wildfire risk. They also prevent the conversion of grasslands to shrublands.
