This easy trail is perfect for getting out there and experiencing some lovely scenery and a fascinating piece of Northern California history. At just under three miles long, it's great for people of all ages and activity levels.
The trail starts at the Knights Ferry Recreation Area. If you haven't been here before, you're in for a real treat. The sprawling park is absolutely breathtaking, but most importantly, it's home to the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge.
You'll come across the bridge soon after starting out on the trail. Spanning 330-feet, it's considered the the longest covered bridge in the entire country. It's definitely a sight to be seen!
The original bridge was constructed in 1857. However, that is not the bridge that exists today. It was destroyed in 1862 due to an abundance of water during spring that year. The bridge was rebuilt in 1863 and that's the bridge that you can see when you visit the park today!
If you continue down the trail, you'll eventually come across other historic structures from the area's Gold Rush era. Many of these old relics haven't been used in decades but others, like the old general store, have been in business for over a century. Historic gems you're bound to come across are the town's old mill, fire station, and jail.
The history that this trail showcases is truly amazing, but the scenery is just as memorable. The trail closely follows the Stanislaus River, leading you through a gorgeous landscape of hills, wildflowers, and rock formations.
