The trail starts in the park's Butte Lake parking area. It's suggested that hikers stop by the visitor center to pick up a leaflet that explains the various features of the Cinder Cone Nature Trail. You can also grab one at the trailhead.
At first, the trail appears to be quite easygoing with a gentle grade that's surrounded by beautiful woodlands. However, the trail quickly begins to steepen as Cinder Cone comes into view.
