The lookout can be reached from the tiny town of Sierraville. You'll head north on State Highway 89 for approximately 9 miles before reaching the town of Calpine. The lookout can be reached by dirt road just a few miles outside of town.

The lookout tower was originally constructed in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It's one of only three remaining windmill-style lookouts in all of California. The tower was regularly used to watch for wildfires every year until 1975. Today, you can sleep in this incredible piece of history.

Perched high above the treetops, you'll be treated to a jaw-dropping view of the Tahoe National Forest. The trees seem to go on for as long as the eye can see. It's a magnificent sight that will absolutely floor you.

You'll find that the inside of the tower is surprisingly comfy. The 14' by 14' room contains two single beds, a dry sink, table, chairs, and a few basic pans and utensils. It's not much, but it's all you'll need in a stunning landscape such as this one.

The lookout doesn't contain electricity or water but you'll find propane-powered appliances in the cabin. Remember to bring your own food, water, bedding, and any other essential supplies you may need.

This remote outpost makes for a tranquil getaway that you won't soon forget. The difficult part is pulling yourself away from this peaceful sanctuary and bringing yourself back to reality!
