This beloved family attraction is bound to delight your senses, no matter how old or young you are. Tucked away among the apple orchards of Sonoma County, the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens makes for a magical place to spend the day. Home to hundreds of vibrant butterflies, this place is simply stunning.
Comprised of nine acres of vines, thickets, and flowering pathways, the butterfly garden is open to visitors this year from April 1 to October 31. While visiting, you'll find yourself totally immersed in the habitat's enchanting beauty.
The garden has been welcoming visitors for a long, long time. Initially started in the 1920s, it may just be the oldest butterfly garden in the country.
It all started when Della Hallberg, an avid gardener, planted a California native vine called Dutchman's Pipe. The vine provided an abundance of larval plant food for what would become the butterfly known as the Pipevine Swallowtail.
Della passed along her love of nature and butterflies to her daughter, Louise. Louise continued the butterfly habitat, growing it to include food for over 40 butterfly species until her passing in 2017.
Today, the garden is dedicated to sharing their rich knowledge of butterflies with visitors and inspiring future generations to provide habitats for these lovely little creatures.
The garden is open to visitors by appointment only, so be sure to call ahead to schedule a time to see the butterflies. The general public is welcome to schedule visits anytime from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information on this amazing butterfly garden, visit their website here .
