Hiding within Auburn State Recreation Area, the hike to Black Hole of Calcutta Falls is definitely one to remember. Boasting incredible views of the American River the entire way, it's a mesmerizing journey from start to finish.
The trailhead is located right off Highway 49 soon after you reach the confluence of the North Fork and Middle Fork of the American River. You'll find the parking area for the trail right after crossing a small bridge. The trail begins at Gate 150.
After taking off from the gate, you'll almost immediately come across the "No Hands Bridge." The trail crosses the bridge and continues along the steep hillside. The hike itself boasts very little elevation gain, making for an easygoing and perfectly enjoyable stroll along the river.
It isn't long before you'll begin to hear the trickling of Black Hole of Calcutta Falls. The waterfall is located just a mile down the trail and it's easy to find. In fact, the trail leads you right to a bridge where you can enjoy a direct viewpoint!
The waterfall definitely isn't the largest we've ever seen, but it's an absolutely beautiful sight to behold. Surrounded by lush scenery, you could easily lose yourself while taking in the sights and sounds of this delightful cascade.
