There is certainly no shortage of fabulous natural swimming holes in Northern California, but the confluence on the American River in Auburn State Recreation Area has got to be one of the best! This understated area is interesting for so much more than the cool, clear natural pool that attracts visitors from all over NorCal, making it an all-around winner for a summer day trip in our part of the Golden State.
Located in the former Gold Rush country, the sparkling waters of the American River have attracted people for decades. Some of the best swimming can be found beneath the Highway 49 bridge, which offers shade to sun-weary swimmers.
There is a small fee of $10 to park in the two lots which are patrolled by rangers, however, street parking is free. The trail to the swimming hole is a gentle slope rated easy, but water shoes and camp chairs are recommended as the beaches are stony.
Relax in the slow, clear waters beneath the bridge surrounded by the towering hills and let yourself be lulled by the gentle sounds of the river and native wildlife. Or spread out among the stones on the beach for some lovely sunbathing.
Located in Auburn State Park, there are many other interesting things to do around the swimming hole. Stretch your legs on the many trails surrounding the pool and enjoy birdwatching, wildflowers, and even some stargazing at night!
Above the swimming hole, there are even some small rapids for kayaking or for more daring swimmers. Visitors may also reserve a space on a shuttle from April 1 through October 1 that will take them from any of five locations in the City of Auburn to the Confluence between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Friday to Sunday.
For visitors that just can't get enough of the American River and Auburn State Park, there is plenty of camping in Mineral Bar Campground, Ruck-A-Chucky campground, and even a boat-in campground in nearby lower Lake Clementine.
