Are you ready for a roaring good time? North Dakotans tend to love UTV/OHVs – whether they be 4-wheelers, dirt bikes, or even taking their own trucks off-roading. And why shouldn’t they? There are lots of awesome places you can go to tear up some dirt, have fun, and even enjoy some spectacular views. If you’re looking for a fun place to go off-roading, here are 5 UTV trails in North Dakota that will give you the ride of your life.
Traverse through the beautiful Turtle Mountain State Forest on a 10-mile trail. There are plenty of hills to tackle and lots of beautiful forest to explore. This is located near Bottineau, North Dakota and the trailhead for the OHV trail is right next to a parking lot with plenty of space for trailers to haul your vehicles in.
Explore the hills of the Pembina Gorge on more than 15 miles of stunning trails. This is a popular spot for off-roading, and for good reason. The trails offer plenty of fun challenges. Both the hilltops and the dense forest patches offer great scenery to make it a memorable ride.
Traverse through the buttes on the exhilarating Roughrider OHV Trail, located 30 miles south of Mandan. Starting at the Fort Rice Campground, this trail will take you through unique landscapes and plenty of thrills. Who wouldn't want to ride through views like that?
Also known as "The Desert," this is a favorite location for many OHV enthusiasts in North Dakota. Whether it's dry or muddy, it's a total blast for side-by-sides, dirt bikes, and off-roading trucks alike. There are 400 acres to tear up and enjoy. Kimball Bottoms is located just south of Bismarck.
The home of the badlands and Theodore Roosevelt State Park also includes incredible OHV trails. There are miles upon miles worth of trails through the grassy hills and into the painted canyons. It's an experience worth having at least once if you enjoy UTVs.
You can find trail maps and more information about all these locations on the North Dakota Parks and Recreation website. Remember to follow all road and OHV laws (some of which are conveniently listed on the page linked). Some of these locations, such as the Roughrider trails and Turtle Mountain State Recreation Area, occasionally offer OHV safety classes and certifications.
If hitting the trails on four wheels isn’t quite your thing, there are nearly endless miles of trails for non-motorized use throughout the state. Here are some of the best trails in North Dakota for hiking.
