North Dakota has many amazing and beautiful natural wonders. From places like the badlands and towering buttes of the west to the huge, gorgeous prairies and river valleys in the east, there is certainly not a shortage of great wonders to go see. But there are some that people don’t often think about that are totally underrated, and here is one in particular that everyone should check out at least once:
North Dakota's prairie pothole region is one of the most unique and strikingly beautiful in the state.
This area, mostly in central North Dakota, is spotted with hundreds of "potholes" in the hilly prairie landscape that are full of water and become ponds and lakes.
Places like the Davis Ranch near Denhoff, North Dakota are truly gorgeous to see in person and will make you feel like you're as far from civilization as possible.
The plains surrounding these potholes are lush with native grasses and wildflowers during the spring and summer, and walking through here is a mesmerizing experience.
Another important part of this natural wonder is the fact that thousands upon thousands of birds and other animals rely on them as a stop on their migration paths as well as a source of food and water.
An astounding amount of birds like snow geese go through the area each year, especially near places like the Lake Audubon National Wildlife Refuge. It is truly a sight to behold if you ever get the chance while they are passing through. The sound of them taking off is nearly deafening!
Hunters also love this area for the many waterfowl like ducks it holds, and all in all, the prairie pothole region is simply a fantastic, underrated part of the Peace Garden State that everyone should experience at least once.
Have you ever been to North Dakota’s prairie pothole region? Even just a drive through can be an experience worth having. The rolling hills and ponds are just lovely to see! If you’re looking for the ultimate natural and scenic wonders drive in North Dakota, however, you definitely need to check out this road trip.
