Welcome to the beautiful and short Village Trail out at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site.
Informational displays covering the history of these structures and the ecology of the area dot the trail with good places to rest your body and entertain your mind. You can learn all about the area and the history of these dwellings while you enjoy some fresh air.
Out here, a river, a furnished Hidatsa Native American earth lodge, and beautiful wildflowers make for a stunning hike. This little home probably felt great during the heat of the summer!
Also along the trail are beautiful wildflowers and a garden showcasing veggies that Hidatsa Native tribes would have grown back when this village was active.
In the fall and winter, you can see how insulating the home with natural materials worked in your favor. Keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter is the goal of these naturally insulated homes. How cozy!
The trail only runs 1.6 miles in an out-and-back fashion, but goes past two former villages and includes a peaceful riverside walk at the end. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but have to be leashed at all times. Happy hiking!
