When you combine a gorgeous series of trails through the forest and one of the prettiest swimming spots in North Dakota you get an unforgettable experience. Take on a lovely journey through one of the most unique state parks in the state and end at a dreamy, fun, and relaxing swimming hole that the whole family can enjoy. It’s definitely a summer must-do!
This trail to paradise is in North Dakota's Icelandic State Park near the town of Cavalier. To begin, you'll enter the park and get right on the first available trailhead to the Wildwood Trail.
The Wildwood Trail meanders through the trees of the forest for half a mile before reaching a bridge over the Tongue River. After crossing this bridge you'll now be on the Basswood Trail.
By following the Basswood Trail for just over half a mile, you'll be taken through a gorgeous section of the Gunlogson Nature Preserve that is also part of the park. In the summer, this area is lush green and truly breathtaking.
Continue on from Basswood, through a small section of the Old Settlers Trail, and follow the connection to the Bluebird Trail, which is just shy of half a mile. Now you'll start seeing the trees open up to water.
This will lead you right up to the swimming beach where you can lounge on the sand, take a dip in the water, or even do yoga! No matter what you do, it all ends up being an amazing, beautiful experience that'll give you a taste of North Dakota nature and summer fun.
After all is said and done, the trail is around three miles long. For an entire map of the park and its trails, click here. You can also find more information on the Icelandic State Park in general by following this link.
