Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Nestled along I-94 in southeastern North Dakota at Exit #307 between the towns of Valley City and Casselton is a small – very small, we’re talking ‘population under 300’ small here – town that’s literally famous for one thing: the ridiculously good, amazingly incredible fresh-baked pies at a local rest stop. Sure, it doesn’t sound like it ought to be that big of a deal, but it is – the pies are truly just that great. Come to Tower City for the best pies in North Dakota, but stay for the adorable small-town vibe that makes the whole place worthy of exploration.
Tucked away within the tiny town of Tower City is Tower Travel Center, a truck stop that looks pretty average from the outside.
Walk in, though, and the first thing you'll notice is the amazing scent of baked deliciousness that seems to come up and offer every visitor a warm hug.
Meander to the bakery and be transported back to a simpler time, when you might have headed off to a local mom-and-pop diner for a bite to eat with your friends or family.
The entire menu here is worthy of bragging about; everything from breakfast to brunch to dinner and dessert is pretty spot-on, but there's one menu item that is literally famous for just how awesome it is: the made-fresh-from-scratch pies.

All you need to do is scroll through the reviews of Tower Travel Center on just about any website; over and over again, you'll hear about the pie.
We don't blame anyone. It's to die for, and with a ridiculous number of flavors, slices, and entire pies that are available, the only thing we've got to be sad about around here is that there isn't a Tower Travel Center bakery in every town.
Check out the pleasant array of local shops, galleries, and eateries while you're here. Tower City might be very small, but it's mighty, and it truly makes itself worthy of a day trip through and through.
If you're strapped for time, though? You know what your priority is.
