Summer is the perfect time to get out and go explore! The Peace Garden State is full of fantastic summer destinations, perfect for a day out under the sun. There are scenic spots all across the prairie, from beautiful blue lakes to ideal camping locations. If you love all things outdoors and want to soak up as much of the warm weather as possible before winter returns, you must take this scenic summer road trip in North Dakota!
Fill the tank up with gas, pack a bag, and take this awesome weekend drive.
It's time to hit the road for a fun summer trip through North Dakota!
Here is a link to the route with driving directions. This route starts at Devils Lake and goes around, ending in Mandan. You can take it in the opposite direction or jump in at any point!
A summer day at the lake is a perfect one in many people's books. Start off your road trip with a lovely stroll at Devils Lake. There are various parks, recreation areas, and even resorts around the largest natural lake in North Dakota. One great place to experience it is Grahams Island, a state park that is only accessible via one road. It's surrounded by water and has everything you need for a lovely stop. There are picnic tables, trails, a swimming beach, and more.

Now it's time to head north to the Turtle Mountains.
Our next stop is all the way up to the Canadian border, in a scenic spot called Lake Metigoshe. This stunning place is perfect for a lunch picnic and time to stretch your legs after the lengthier drive from the first stop. Even if you don't have time for a full road trip, this place should be on your summer bucket list.

Start driving west after Lake Metigoshe to one of the prettiest wildlife refuges and small towns in the state.
Our next stop is the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge. Scenically located around the town of Kenmare, this refuge is like something from a postcard. Rolling hills and expansive water views are picture-worthy.
Be sure to also stop by the quiet, charming town nestled in the refuge. There is a Danish windmill in the city park worth checking out, and some local shops and restaurants perfect for an afternoon stroll.
After that, the route will take you towards the impressive Lake Sakakawea and further west.
While you're headed west, you'll need to cross the Missouri River. Take the drive over the Four Bears Memorial Bridge and stop by this little recreation area. Even if only for a quick stop, the view from Crow Flies High Recreation Area is absolutely worth a little detour. After you snap some photos, get back on the road!
Even just the drive through this area can be breathtaking. The rugged terrain and "painted" walls are absolutely spectacular. Drive through or stop by and take a trail to appreciate it to the fullest extent. Don't be surprised if you see some wildlife such as bison!
Further south we go for our overnight stay: Medora.
After a full day of beautiful stops, stop by the picturesque wild west town of Medora - a summer must-visit. Eat at one of local restaurants or even experience the Pitchfork Steak Fondue and the Medora Musical. There are local hotels, including unique historic ones, as well as campgrounds in the South Unit of the national park, Sully Creek State Park, or privately owned cabins and campgrounds. Plenty of options for a place to stay!
After you're rested and recharged, it's time to hit the road again the next day and head towards White Butte, even further south.
The beautiful White Butte has the tallest point in all of North Dakota. You can hike to the top and say you've been there, just remember that it is on private land and the landowners appreciate that you respect the area and leave a small donation in the mailbox.

Moving on, the next stop is another stellar lake destination: Lake Tschida.
Lake Tschida is the ultimate summer recreation spot. Gorgeous views, refreshing blue waters, and plenty of ways to enjoy it all. Stop here for a swim or simply for a lakeside stroll and picnic.
Lastly, we'll head back east to a wonderful state park near Mandan.
Abraham Lincoln State Park is the ideal place for a summer day trip. Spend the day hiking the trails, visiting the historic buildings (such as General Custer's home), and even take the only trolley ride in the whole state! Many of these things are only open seasonally, so be sure to get the visit in while you can. It's perfect to wrap up the trip and take home lots of memories.
Summer isn’t going to be around forever! What are your travel plans for the season? Road trips may not be your thing, but who could say no to a North Dakota water park on a hot day?
