North Dakota does not get the attention – or the appreciation – it deserves. It is, quite literally, the least-visited state in the entire United States, more than likely thanks to its remote location, severe winters, and overall perceived lack of things to do. We say “perceived” because there are, in fact, many things to do, see, and experience – enough that we would dare say North Dakota is an excellent getaway and/or vacation destination. Whether you grew up here, moved here, or are thinking about visiting, here are some straight-up beautiful places in North Dakota that’ll always be waiting for you.
1. Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, USA
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one of North Dakota's crown jewels, spanning more than 70,000 acres across the Badlands. Once upon a time, in 1883, president Teddy Roosevelt himself came out and was absolutely awestruck by the beauty of the region. He declared that this must have been the "eighth wonder of the world," and it wasn't long before the region was designated a National Park in his name. To say it's photogenic around here is a bit of an understatement.
2. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge

There are more than 60 wildlife refuges in North Dakota, many of which we've covered before. The Des Lacks National Wildlife Refuge has 10,500 acres along the river of the same name (Des Lacs). Contained within are lakes and riverside shoreline that is simply stunning, especially at sunset. Oh, and it makes for a heck of a scenic drive, too.

Encompassing more than 7,500 acres, Turtle Mountain State Forest is an outdoors enthusiast's dream come true. Lake Metigoshe calls the area home, and as one of the larger lakes in North Dakota, it is THE perfect place to relax and unwind. One can also take in the immense natural beauty of the woods by camping or hiking 'round these parts. Turtle Mountain State Forest in North Dakota is, like we said, a nature lover's dream. Come see why!

4. J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge
J Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge, Upham, ND 58789, USA
As the largest wildlife refuge in North Dakota, there seems to be no limit to the good work done within these acres. It spans more than 57,000 scenic acres, providing a sanctuary for birds (including both migratory and year-round varieties), fish, and plenty of other critters you're sure to run into out here. It's another lovely place to kick back and watch the sunset; it's open until 10 p.m., making it easy to do so.
Home to Assumption Abbey, a stunningly beautiful monastery with some of the most beautiful architecture in North Dakota, the town of Richardton is peaceful, quiet, and perfect for a quick escape over a weekend. There's a lot more to do in this little town than it'll seem at first glance, but you might never want to leave.
So, as it turns out, there are more sunflowers in North Dakota than there are in Kansas (the official "Sunflower State"), and honestly, you just can't go wrong with a visit to any of the seemingly endless fields stretching across our state during late July and early August. Better still, find a local u-pick farm and go home with a hand-picked bouquet.
The Little Missouri River cuts right through Theodore Roosevelt National Park, so while you're here because #1 enticed you to be, be sure to wander the riverbanks a while. Encounter stunning gorges, fascinating landscapes, and so much more. You'll even find some of the best views in North Dakota to be had.
...or any backroads statewide, really. The one pictured here is located nearby Minot and is, admittedly, ridiculously beautiful - but just about any one of the many backroads in North Dakota is sure to thrill you with its stunning beauty.
Our northern state is home to some of the vastest natural prairies in the world. It's the perfect destination for a good old-fashioned vacation spot in the Midwest where you get all the peace and quiet you could ever dream of, all in the company of some of North Dakota's most beautiful and unique wilderness.
So, there you have it – nine stunningly beautiful places in North Dakota just waiting for you to come to explore! Come for the beauty, stay for the adventure – that’s what we say.
