North Dakota is one of the top producers of potatoes in the entire country, and to celebrate this (plus some good ol’ football), an annual festival has been held in Grand Forks for years. Not only are there lots of potatoes to be had here, there is also a record-breaking amount of free french fries served. If you love french fries, this is an absolute must-experience, because it’s practically a french fry overload!
The annual Potato Bowl in Grand Forks, North Dakota is happening from September 18-22, 2018, for a week of fun and delicious potato-themed events and activities.
The event is happening all throughout the city with things like a baked potato bar, chip giveaways, potato pancake breakfast, live music and entertainment, and so much more. Football included, of course!
This event centers around UND's homecoming game and has been happening yearly for over half a century. Why potatoes? The first Potato Bowl back in 1966 was a game between two potato-growing rivalry states: Idaho and North Dakota. 2018 will be a rematch between these two states.
Before the game on Saturday, you'll want to check out all the activities on the days leading up to it. They include things for all ages to enjoy, such as potato sack races:
And, of course, the biggest part of the festival: the french fry feed! The Simplot French Fry Feed takes place on Thursday, September 20 and is an all-you-can-eat french fry frenzy. This specially-made fryer rolls up to pump out as many french fries as it can in one day.
The event has been serving record-breaking amounts of french fries each year, and last year in 2017 they broke their own record with a whopping 8,154 pounds of french fries served.
If you fancy yourself a true french fry fanatic, you could enter in the french fry eating contest and put yourself up to the test. It's a french fry overload!
At the end of the day after you've consumed just as many fries as you can handle, enjoy fireworks and prepare yourself for two more days of potato and football fun.
Just can’t wait for the festival to get your french fry fix? No worries! North Dakota is definitely a french fry loving state, and there are plenty of restaurants here that serve french fries so good they should be the main course. Check them out!
