Are you in search of the perfect small-town escape right about now? Yeah… we get it. We’re ALWAYS on the lookout for awesome small towns to run off to the moment we get the hankering to do so, and luckily for us, there just so happens to be numerous wonderful small towns all over the state of North Dakota to choose from. Some are sleepy, some are artsy, and some are just so cute and folksy that they seem to emanate those peak upper-Midwest vibes, where everyone is friendly and warm (despite the chill in the air) and everywhere you go there’s a sense of community. Walhalla is one of those such towns; this friendly town in North Dakota is absolutely worth a visit over a long weekend – if not longer. Check it out:
Walhalla, North Dakota, is located in the tip-top northernmost point in the state, quite close to the Canada/US international border.
It has the distinct honor of being among the earliest settlements - and subsequently, towns - in the entire state. It was established in 1845 and has been going strong ever since.
There's a very strong sense of community here, from the local mom-and-pop shops to eateries, galleries, and more.
You won't find a whole lot of enormous corporate influence here; Walhalla prides itself on its simplicity as well as the wide range of things there are to do and see here and nearby. For such a small town (the population is under 1,000 people), it sure is big in the "things to do" department.

Browse the local stores and restaurants; check out classics like the Waters Family Restaurant and Bakery, and then spend a night or two (or more) at the old Forestwood Inn.
Walhalla is located near multiple awesome places for those who enjoy the outdoors; be sure to check out the amazing Pembina Gorge Recreation Area. Take your pick from hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, and so much more. It's an amazing place year-round, but be sure to come back for the changing of the leaves in autumn. It's one of North Dakota's finest natural paradises.
Anyone on the lookout for towns in North Dakota with classic-feeling Midwestern charm needs to look no further than Walhalla.
Between the friendly residents, the unique shops and restaurants you'll never find anywhere else, and the whole "surrounded by nature and its splendor" thing, you're sure to fall in love with this little northern town.
