Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
Feel like you’re standing at the top of the world at one specific overlook in North Dakota. It’ll give you the most breathtaking panoramic view of one of the state’s most iconic landscapes. No matter the time of year, day, or weather, you’ll be blown away by what you see here and you’ll be left with unforgettable memories (and probably a lot of photos). Experience it yourself:
This overlook is located right off I-94 and serves as a scenic view into the Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, North Dakota.
It is called the Painted Canyon Overlook. Not only is it a scenic overlook, it also serves as a great rest stop to get out of the car and stretch your legs with the bonus of it being located in a fantastic place.
You can drive right off the interstate and park at the scenic overlook, no hiking required. Check out the visitors center while you're there to learn about the area and its history.
Visitors center aside, what you're really here for is the view from the overlook itself. There are informational signs there to tell you about it, but you'll barely be paying attention to anything else as soon as you see...
You'll easily see why it is called the Painted Canyon Overlook when you gaze upon the striped, colorful formations that make up the terrain. Thousands of years of sediments layering throughout time and then being eroded away slowly reveal the resulting effect, and it is absolutely breathtaking.
These canyons go on and on and fill the horizon completely. They are strikingly gorgeous and worth the trip to see in person, because pictures just don't do it enough justice.
Rain or shine, summer or winter, the Painted Canyon Overlook while always give you a view that could knock your socks off. It's this kind of natural beauty that makes North Dakota so great, and this is the perfect way to experience it.
