North Dakota is a huge, vast state. There are interesting hidden things around every corner, some far off the beaten path and some we all know and love. If you really want to go way out there in this state, the farthest you can go in one direction, try the furthest northeastern point. Right up in the very corner of ND is an awesome place to visit that’ll give you an unforgettable experience. Check it out:
Head on out to the very furthest corner of North Dakota for a place that's truly one of a kind.
The northeasternmost point in the state is where the oldest community in the entire state of North Dakota - in both of the Dakotas in fact - is located. It's called Pembina, and you might have heard of it.
The population of the town is only 592 and it's stayed a close, tight-knit community throughout all these years. There are a handful of local businesses, plenty of older buildings with a lot of charm, and lots of history hiding here and there.
Since it is in the northeasternmost point, it is just a stone's throw away from the Canadian border. It serves as a port of entry and the town is so charming to the point that even the customs house is lovely to look at.
Pembina lies alongside both the Red River and the spot where the Pembina River meets it. Thanks to this, the area is beautifully scenic. There are dense trees around the Pembina River and eventually that area turns into the stunning Pembina Gorge.
The community of Pembina was founded nearly a century before North Dakota was even named a state. To explore some of this history you can visit the Pembina State Museum in the town.
This museum explores the history of the area from the early indigenous tribes who lived here like the Chippewa, Lakota, and Assiniboine, to when European explorers first came to the area in the 16th century, and all the way to settlers coming to the land in the 19th century, to today.
While you visit the museum you can take a trip up to their huge observation deck and get a view of this special point in North Dakota. There is no other town that can say the same as Pembina can, and it's worth a visit.
Have you ever visited Pembina before? Even if you haven’t checked out the town yet, you definitely don’t want to miss the amazing Pembina Gorge. It’s one of North Dakota’s most spectacular natural areas. Learn more about it right here.
