Embrace your inner explorer and visit this one small town in North Dakota. There are so many beautiful nature spots surrounding it that it’s truly a nature lover’s dream. Plus, the town itself is perfectly charming on its own! No matter the time of year, this is a great place to visit, and here’s why:
Out in Dunn County, a small town with a population at just about 750 sits nestled among some of North Dakota's most beautiful and unique landscapes.
That small town is Killdeer. Founded in 1914, it has charming streets and plenty of local businesses that make it a fun day trip destination on its own. But the nearby natural attractions are what really make a trip here amazing.
Killdeer was named after the nearby Killdeer Mountains, which tower above the fields below. Places like the mysterious Medicine Hole and the historic Battle of Killdeer Mountains site are located among the hills.
Although you can no longer take the trail to the Medicine Hole as the mountains are mostly private property, you can enjoy the view from the ground as well as the surrounding scenery. Depending on the time of year it may be lush with wildflowers.
What you can visit, and should, is another nearby natural wonder just a stone's throw away from Killdeer. This impressive site comes from the Little Missouri State Park:
Just 17 miles north of Killdeer is this fantastic place. It is a perfect glimpse into the badlands with the rugged terrain. There are plenty of campsites and trails to experience and explore it all.
Another spot close by is the Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge, a stunning area home to waterfowl, deer, and many other animals. Its 4,000 and some acres consists mostly of wetlands and prairie.
