This lesser-known natural area is plenty quiet with great views, calming trails, and it’s ideal for some mental relaxation.
Explore the forested floodplains of the Missouri River at the Missouri River State Natural Area just outside of Bismarck and Mandan, North Dakota.
Being in a wooded floodplain, you can expect to walk through tunnels of trees. Rare trees such as the peach leaf willow can be found here, as well as cottonwood and green ash.
Even in the wintertime, this park is wonderful for a quiet stroll. Wildlife such as whitetail deer, fox, bald eagles, and many more varieties of birds call the preserve home and you might spot them during your explorations.
With the sound of the flowing river, leaves moving in the breeze, and songbirds fluttering around you, you'll be completely immersed in nature. It's definitely a great spot for unwinding and getting back to your roots.
The park is open year-round and is conveniently located just off of I-94 in between Bismarck and Mandan, on the west side of the Missouri River. You'll be glad you gave it a visit!
