You don't need to mountain bike to take the trail, however. People enjoy this trail on foot and on horseback. The parts of the trail that go through the Theodore Roosevelt National Park are for hiking and horseback riding only.
Throughout this trail, there are campgrounds and other facilities to stop at along the way if you plan on taking the whole thing on. There are also some water crossings, so make sure you are prepared for those.

Wild horse herds, prairie dog towns, coyotes, and many other creatures are also viewable from the trail. It truly feels like you're hiking through untouched wilderness.
