North Dakota’s badlands will be the stage for a beautiful, colorful show in September that is worth experiencing. The only annual hot air balloon event in the entire state will be happening in just a few short weeks. Here’s everything you need to know so you won’t miss out on this awesome opportunity:
Grab your camera and pack a lunch and head out to the scenic area around Medora, North Dakota this September for a dazzling display. The badlands will fill with color during the Medora Hot Air Balloon Rally & Badlands Kite Fest.
The event will be taking place on Saturday, September 7th and Sunday, September 8th, 2019. During this time you'll be treated to views of the balloons floating over the painted canyons.
The balloons will be taking off bright and early each morning at about 6:30 AM. From then, they'll spend an hour and a half floating across the Little Missouri River, bison herds, and in view of the spectators from Medora.
It's an absolutely unforgettable sight to see the colorful spectacle, even if you're just on the ground and not up in one of the baskets yourself. And that's not all the event has to offer.
While the hot air balloons are the main attraction in the morning, after they land, both casual visitors and professionals can set their own aircraft to the sky in the form of kites.
The Badlands Kite Fest will take place after the balloons on both Saturday and Sunday. Huge, beautiful kites will be filling up the sky with dazzling shapes and colors. You and your family are welcome to bring your own kites or buy kites from vendors at the event.
This event is one of the most dazzling displays in North Dakota all year, and it'll be over and gone until next year before you know it. It's one of those things everyone should experience at least once!
The hot air balloons can be viewed easily from Medora and the surrounding area. They will go whichever way the wind takes them, so there’s no saying exactly what will be the best spot to view them just yet. The kite flying will take place by the Burning Hills Amphitheatre at the address below. Find more information right here.
Address: 3422 Chateau Road, Medora, ND, 58645
While you’re in the area, you might as well check out the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s more than just a backdrop for the hot air balloons – it’s an entire treasure trove of natural beauty, geological oddities, and history.
