The famous wild west town has been around for ages and inspired people like Theodore Roosevelt thanks to its beautiful location, rich history, and wonderful residents. However, more people should know about how Medora came to be. There’s a historic mansion in North Dakota that holds a lot of that history – and it’s fascinating to visit.

Nestled in the badlands and overlooking some tremendous views, the Chateau de Mores is an iconic North Dakota mansion with a lot of history behind it.

The 26-room building was built by and named after the Marquis de Mores, a French businessman who settled here to start a cattle ranch and meatpacking business in the late 1800s. It was he who established the local town of Medora, which is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state.

Both inside and out, this beautiful structure is truly fascinating. Though his cattle business ended in failure, the Marquis lived an eventful life. He named the town after his wife, Medora Marie Von Hoffman.
