What is it about autumn that brings out the explorer in us all? There’s just something about this particular season that screams “adventures” while at the same time craving something a little spooky. After all, it’s almost Halloween, and the spookiest time of year is nearly upon us. Something that could be fun is taking a day to wander around one of our state’s most intriguing ghost towns; this ghost town in North Dakota has been essentially dead for decades, but that needn’t stop you from embarking on a fun fall day trip to the place.

Wheelock was a railroad town established in 1902.

It was never a large town; during its busiest times, it never had more than about 120 residents.
Even today, there's maybe a small handful of folks who still live here - and we don't really blame them.

The silence is nice.
Few things are quite as interesting as walking what used to be the roadways of this tiny town, marveling at the decaying buildings and wondering about what was.

You'll probably be surprised at the condition of some of the old buildings; many of them are in better shape than you'd probably assume they ought to be. It certainly makes for interesting photos.

Wheelock hasn't been without some kind of excitement in recent decades, though.

In 2005, the general store burned to the ground. There was a large grain elevator here, but it was razed to the ground in 2011(ish), and so too was the school - for no known reason.
Most of the buildings remain, though, and remain they shall until they're ultimately taken by the elements.
