Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
North Dakota has many wonderful, charming small towns scattered across the prairie. All of them have their special characteristics and stories, but the publication House Beautiful recently named one of them the most beautiful. The title went to a unique little town that has everything you could ever want for small town living, and here’s what it has to offer:
Garrison, North Dakota was named the most beautiful small town in the state by House Beautiful, and that claim is certainly not to be dismissed. Known as both the walleye capital and the Christmas capital of ND, this town is absolutely lovely to visit.
Garrison was founded in 1905 and has a population of just under 1,500 residents. The streets emulate the perfect small town setting with an old theater, drug store, restaurants, and other locally-owned family businesses.
They even have an old malt shop called Ye Olde Malt Shoppe & Eatery. They are retro inside and out and will take you back to simpler times. Plus, their food is delicious!
Along with the pleasant streets of the town, Garrison is located in a beautiful location. Lake Sakakawea, formed by the Garrison Dam, is right next door. Fort Stevenson State Park is part of the township and offers plenty of great recreation - and gorgeous views to boot. Plus, this is where the walleye capital title is proven to be true.
Fort Stevenson hosts a myriad of events and activities, including camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, and even one of North Dakota's most dazzling annual kite festivals, SkyFest over Fort Stevenson. Families will have everything they need from the quiet life to the many things to do in this town.
Through the end of November and December, Garrison becomes even more storybook-like by hosting the Dickens Village Festival. During the weekends, the entire town transforms into a scene right from Charles Dickens' famous Christmas tale, and they even have iconic London sights like telephone booths and a red double-decker bus.
From the wonderful townsfolk, pleasant streets, and gorgeous scenery, it's no wonder why Garrison was named the most beautiful small town in North Dakota. It's a picture-perfect prairie town everyone should visit at least once.
Garrison is certainly a one-of-a-kind town. What do you think about this place? Do you agree with the title House Beautiful gave it? If you know of an even prettier town in North Dakota you think deserves a look, let us know here!
