You can find natural beauty in many shapes and forms in North Dakota, and there are towns tucked away in every type of terrain. From the little cities among the buttes of the west, to the charming small towns in the rolling prairie hills in the central region, the big cities dotting the vast river valley in the east, and everything in between. There are a few places in particular that are right among the most beautiful natural scenery the Peace Garden State has to offer, and here is one of them.
Fort Totten, North Dakota is a small town located in Benson County that is steeped in history and surrounded by gorgeous natural scenery.
The town began with the building of the actual Fort Totten itself, which was established in 1867 and is now a historic site. The rest of the town sprung up later and today it holds a population of 1,243.
Fort Totten is right up next to Devils Lake, North Dakota's largest natural lake. You can get this fantastic view of the lake at Sully's Hill National Game Preserve. The preserve is right next to and partially surrounding Fort Totten.
Devils Lake itself offers plenty of recreational opportunities, including some of the best fishing in North Dakota. It's hard not to love a place like Fort Totten that's in such an awesome location!
