Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
North Dakota is one of those places that just never gets the proper credit – or love – that it’s due. In the spring and summer, it gets a little more impressive thanks to swaths of stunning wildflowers that pop up just about everywhere. So, I’ve gone ahead and put together a beautiful, scenic trip that’ll lead you to some of the most exquisite wildflowers in North Dakota. If you’re feeling up to adventure, this one’s for you! Enjoy! If you’d like to follow along, feel free to check out the official Google Map.
This awesome adventure covers a total of 503 miles, and without stops, it takes almost nine hours to drive... so perhaps this would be a great weekend trip instead. Either way, strap in and let's go!
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is an amazing place to visit all year, but during wildflower season, it becomes especially awe-inspiring. There's very few places in North Dakota where you'll encounter literally thousands of flowers all over the place, but this is one of 'em. There's just something about a carpet of wildflowers peppered across the rolling hills that's pure magic.

2. Belfield – The Painted Canyon Nature Trail
Painted Canyon Nature Trail, Belfield, ND 58622, USA
While you're at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, you'll definitely want to stop and do The Painted Canyon Nature Trail, which is quite literally famous for its wildflowers in the spring and early summer. It's so remarkably stunning that it's worthy of its very own stop on this wondrous wildflower road trip in North Dakota.
Our next stop is at Little Missouri State Park, which isn't terribly far from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This stunning North Dakota state park is well-known as a place for wildflower lovers, as the whole landscape is often covered in blooms during specific times of year. It's nothing short of tremendously beautiful, and I'm sure you'll never forget just how magical it is.
4. Audubon National Wildlife Refuge
Audubon National Wildlife Refuge Complex, 3275 11th St NW, Coleharbor, ND 58531, USA
Next up on our little adventure is the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, yet another spot well-known for its astonishing wildflowers. Plus, there's more than "just" flowers here - as a wildlife refuge, you're sure to spot all sorts of interesting critters that you might never otherwise see. This stop is for so much more than just the flowers - you'll see.
5. Fort Ransom State Park
Fort Ransom State Park, 5981 Walt Hjelle Pkwy, Fort Ransom, ND 58033, USA
Fort Ransom State Park is an underrated gem; like the other spots on this list, it's a cornucopia of beautiful blooms, showing off its full splendor by May (and sometimes into June). With endless trails and plenty of camping opportunities, you can be sure that Fort Ransom State Park will be one of your new favorite spots.
6. Wildflower Grove Park
Wildflower Grove Park, 9 Lower Terrace, Fargo, ND 58102, USA
Wildflower Grove Park might be the final stop on this adventure, but it's just as wonderful as the others. In fact, the flowers here are SO reliable that the whole place is named after 'em; if that doesn't tell you the awesomeness to be expected, I don't know what will. Take a gentle stroll in the early afternoon... you'll love it.
